It was a pleasure to see so many people come out to both the Double IPA fest this past Saturday, as well as the Winter Brew fest the Saturday before. What was even better, was seeing people come up to us out of the blue and tell us they were coming to our event on the 13th! It’s looking like we might actually have a decent turnout, even if it rains. That being said, we’re making the final preparations before the big day this Saturday.
The brew sculpture was built around 2000, which means it is pushing 70 in doggy years. So, we felt it was time to replace the hip and pop a viagra for Ol’ Betsy. Actually, we haven’t named our brewing sculpture. If you have a good name, give us some recommendations. We had to replace the gas regulator as well as upgrade the air hose from a 10 foot line with a rusty quick disconnect, to a 100 foot line with some shiny new stainless. The Super Bowl prevented us from giving it a test run, so that will have to wait for the night before the event. Hopefully it all works so we won’t be stuck without a brewing rig come Saturday morning. Knowing how things have turned out for us in the past, I’m wouldn’t be surprised if our kettle fell apart in transit.
All in all, we’re really excited to be hosting our first public event. We hope to see everyone who peruses this website to come stop by and have a few beers. Here’s what’s going to be on tap, in addition to the Jack’s regular lineup inside.
Beers On Tap
Dopplebock on oak
Double IPA on oak
Peppermint Porter
Orange Porter
Jack’s Regular Lineup
Boys of Summer Wheat
Hardwood Pale Ale
Grid Iron Amber Ale
Penalty Shot Porter
India Pale Ale
Apricot Mango
Hefeweizen
Red Ale

This past weekend the original plan was to brew up our original porter combined with what was supposed to be an imperial version of the porter as well. It seems as the brewing gods had it in for us from the beginning:
- The propane tank ran out of propane when kicking off the first boil.
- Hooray, it was only the reserve tank that was empty.
- Nope, the actual tank ran out of propane shortly after.
- Hooray, we had a spare tank to get us through the two batches.
- CO2 tank runs out, requires a quick trip to the sporting goods store.
- Imperial Porter was supposed to have a gravity reading of 1.110, comes out with a reading of 1.070.
- Screw it, we’ll just add something to it later to make it a unique porter. We’ll just add some yeast…BANG
- Lid to our yeast storage container blows and spews yeastie goodness all over the walls and not into the carboys.

I don’t think we have had more things go wrong on a single day of brewing. However it wasn’t a total loss. We still have 18 gallons of porter fermenting waiting for experimenting. We also got to hang out with a really cool cat, Marcel. A lot of use bay area beer guys know this guy, and he is super knowledgeable about everything beer.
As Thomas Edison vaguely said…”I did not fail at making an imperial porter, I simply found a way not to make it.”

Our SF Beer Week event is being planned for Saturday February 13th, 2010. We want to brew a collaboration beer with Jack’s Brewing Company prior to the event for two reasons.
First, we will have this beer on tap at the event for all our faithful fans to have while they enjoy our show.
Second, we will brew this recipe scaled down from 10bbls to 10 gallons on our current pilot system out front of Jack’s to show what ingredients go into beer and what the finished product is like.
We have a couple ideas for what we want to brew, but I am curious if any of you have any input or recommendations for what you would like to see. Post up a style or three you think would be cool and we’ll throw it into the mix in our final collaboration discussion.
What: Homebrewing Demonstration put on by 510 Brewing
When: Saturday, February 13th, 2010 @ 12:00PM
Where: Jack’s Brewing Co., 39176 Argonaut Way, Fremont, CA 94536
Cost: High Five and/or a Hug
If you are attending, and you are on Facebook. Join the event invite here.

SF Beer Week is coming up soon and we have been invited/asked to get something together for the party. By ask I mean I volunteered us to get something together to the organizers of the event. In looking at the events, there is a lack of “homebrewing” events as well as a lack of events in the East Bay. So why not kill two birds with one stone.
What we want to do is bust out our brewing rig into a public venue like the parking lot of a brewery/brewpub and maybe have a couple other homebrewers do the same. I would love for someone who does extract to come out as well so people can see how easy it is to actually get their foot in the door. If any of you out there are extract brewers, give us a shout so we can get you included in the event.
There are a few hurdles, however, that I think need to be overcome before we just show up and start brewing. I am clueless to the laws needed to get such an event up and running. I have sent a request over to CA’s Alcohol Beverage Control to try and get their help. I also pinged the guys from More Beer, since I know they put on events like this every so often. If anyone has some useful information on how to get it setup or activities we should do for the event, please speak up.
